A snippet of history
Established in 1913, ‘Bethany’ has been farmed by successive generations for over 110 years. Spanning 900 acres of rolling hills, contoured paddocks, and offering panoramic views of the South Burnett region-stretching up to 180 degrees from the Hill, the property’s highest point-its natural beauty is truly unparalleled.
In 1952, Sir Joh and his sister Agneta (the “J&A” featured on The Old Hangar’s sign) formed a partnership, launching an agricultural contracting business that utilised Tiger Moth aircraft’s to service local farms. Several original artefacts from the aircraft hangar era remain on-site (you’ll spot them lit up at night), preserving this unique chapter of the property’s history. It was also from 1952, that Sir Joh and Lady Flo made ‘Bethany’ their home, where they raised their family and established their base throughout their political careers.
In April 2024, the Old Hangar was reimagined and unveiled as a wedding and events venue, complementing the iconic Bethany Cottages perched atop the Hill, with sweeping views of the property below. Once cropped with peanuts, kiwi fruit, and an avocado orchard, the land now supports a thriving herd of 200 Angus commercial breeding cattle, alongside the farm’s beloved Charolais steer, Podrick. The property also hosts horses, border collie’s, sheep, (which assist in training the working border collie pups), and an abundance of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, and occasionally, a koala perched in the gum trees by the dirt road.
Preserving History, Inspiring Tomorrow
The Old Hangar began as more than just a building it was a forgotten space filled with echoes of the past. Once a place of movement, hard work, and stories untold, the hangar stood still for years, weathered by time yet unbroken in spirit.
Instead of letting its history fade, we decided to breathe new life into it. What was once an empty shell transformed into The Old Hangar a brand that honors its roots while embracing creativity and new beginnings. Every beam, wall, and detail carries the mark of resilience, reminding us that even the old can be reborn into something meaningful.
Today, The Old Hangar stands as a symbol of heritage and vision. It is more than a space—it is a community, a gathering place, and a story in motion. Here, we blend the raw character of the past with the innovation of the present, creating experiences that last and connections that matter.
